So there may be at least one more hour of Red Dwarf on the horizon. I still think it's a shame the show stopped after Series VIII (10 years ago!) so that Doug Naylor could pursue a movie version that never happened. Though some were upset at Series VIII's resurrection of Red Dwarf's entire crew (or just reject everything post-Rob Grant's departure on basic principle), I thought the reboot was a huge shot of adrenaline that the show sorely needed (especially after how turgid Series VII turned out). Honestly, I'd rank VIII as one of the best all around series of the show's run, marred only by its weak "cliffhanger" ending (Rimmer kicks Death in the nuts? That's the ending?), which is even more disappointing after watching an alternate ending on the DVD that would've served much better as the show's finale. If this really is what they say it is, I hope it'll give the show the send-off it always deserved... or maybe open the door to more new adventures...

Bringing back everyone on the Red Dwarf was pretty bad. But as you say, the show needed a change. I'd argue losing the Red Dwarf and shifting entirely to the Starbug was just as bad. That's what got them in a creative corner in the first place.

Mind, having the show run that many seasons was probably also an issue as well. Having such a minimal cast in a far distant future set on the long way back to Earth, it doesn't look like a concept that was meant to run as long as it did.

Though, honestly, Rimmer kicking Death in the nuts was about as high an endpoint as I figured it would go out on. Everyone dead (weren't they? It *has* been quite a while since I saw the final episode), but Rimmer of all people being defiant at the very end. Where else could you really end the series? Get back to Earth? Kill everyone including Rimmer? Most anything else would be a non-ending.

The alternate ending went something like this:

Rimmer succeeds in remembering the antivirus from the mirror dimension and saves Red Dwarf. Everyone except Lister, Kryten, Cat and Kochanski (and maybe the other prisoners?) abandoned the ship. Refusing to let those who left them to die reboard, Rimmer finally achieves (in a manner) his lifelong ambition, as the new "captain" of Red Dwarf.

To me, that feels much more like a proper note to end the show on. Of course, they didn't think at the time that it'd be the last episode ever...

Reading over the wiki for the ep, there was another ending that wasn't filmed, but would've been better, IMO. In this version, Red Dwarf is saved by Ace Rimmer (who would be the "original" Rimmer who left Red Dwarf in Series VII).
